Our winter mountaineering instruction is appropriate for anyone who wants to learn to safely explore the mountains in winter. The knowledge and experience you will gain from these courses can be applied in the Adirondacks, or in mountains worldwide.
These courses are ideal for those seeking a wilderness experience in combination with non-technical or semi-technical climbing. No climbing experience is required, and although we may use a rope on occasional exposed sections, you should not expect to get an introduction to technical climbing. If your interests lean more toward technical climbing, or if, with time, they evolve in that direction, our Ice Climbing programs can open the door to this more complex and demanding environment.
The absence of glaciated terrain in the eastern United States makes it impossible to effectively teach glacier navigation and crevasse rescue skills in this part of the country, so we do not include these topics in our courses. If your mountain activities will include glacier travel, you'll need to acquire these skills in a glaciated region.
