Arranging For Accommodations             Download This Page (246K)

Most of our programs run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Unless you have booked an overnight program, you will need to make arrangements for your own accommodations each night.

From undeveloped campsites to luxury hotels, there is a wide range of accommodations to suit any preference or budget. Bed & breakfast establishments, motels, hotels, and cottages are conveniently close and abundant. Accommodations during our overnight trips are in mountain campsites.

A comfortable room is most welcome after a long day in the mountains

We will be happy to help you decide where to stay. We work hard to make sure you enjoy your days in the mountains and we want your evenings to be enjoyable too! We can tell you more about the listed establishments or suggest alternatives to suit your preferences. If you let us know where you would prefer to stay we will contact an innkeeper and check for vacancies on the date(s) you need. If they have space available, we will have them contact you to confirm your reservation and arrange for a deposit. During peak periods it can be very difficult to find a place to stay so we suggest you make your reservations early.

Any deposits, payments or cancellations you arrange with an innkeeper are separate and distinct from those made with Alpine Adventures, Inc. We are not responsible for any costs you incur due to cancellations, inclement weather or other circumstances. Innkeepers sometimes make adjustments to their prices due to demand and/or season. We try to list accurate prices however, that is not always possible so please use the prices listed only as a rough guide to costs. If you speak to an innkeeper, it is always a good idea to mention you will be participating in one of our programs.

At day's end

The following list is provided as a service to you. There are many other accommodations in the area, some very good, and some not-so-good. The establishments we suggest provide, in our opinion, good value and service.

Camping

If you decide to camp, rather stay in one of the local inns, you have the option of staying in a commercial campsite for a fee, or staying in one of the free “undeveloped” roadside campsites in the area.

For more information regarding “undeveloped” roadside campsites, please contact us.

We suggest you consider the camping option from spring through fall only. All of the commercial campsites in the area close for the winter. Although remote, wilderness camping can be delightful in winter (we offer programs specific to this activity), short days and challenging access make it impractical if you are attending one of our programs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Even roadside winter camping, without a shower or place to dry wet clothing, is generally unpleasant after an active day in the mountains.

Commercial campgrounds can get very crowded during the summer and reservations are recommended. These campgrounds provide amenities such as hot showers and water spigots. Your tent, with valuables removed, will probably be safe if left on your site while you are gone for the day. For information about other campgrounds in the area contact the Lake Placid Commerce & Visitors Bureau at (800) 447-5224.

In all cases, if decide to camp, you will need to have access to a car. There are no sites of any kind within walking distance from public transportation.

Wilmington Notch Campground (NY State DEC) (518) 946-7172 or (800) 456-CAMP
(www.dec.state.ny.us/website/do/camping/campgrounds/wilmington.html)
Route 86, Wilmington, New York 12997
This campground is located on the West Branch of the Ausable River 3.5 miles west of the village of Wilmington. Open in the summers only.

Adirondack Loj (518) 523-3441 (www.adk.org/ad_log/index.aspx)
Adirondack Loj Road, New York 12946
The Adirondack Mountain Club, a conservation organization dedicated to preserving the Adirondack Mountains, runs this campground and bunk room facility. Located about 15 miles from us, there is drive-in tent camping with hot showers available. A bunkroom and dining room, known as the Loj, is situated adjacent to Heart Lake. Advance reservations are required for the bunkroom and highly recommended for the campground, as both areas are frequently filled during the summer months.

KOA: Adirondacks (518) 946-7878
77 Fox Farm Road, Wilmington, NY 12997
This commercial campsite for tent and RV camping is located on just off Route 86 between the villages of Wilmington and Lake Placid about 20 minutes from our location. Cottages are also available. Amenities include pool and game room. Open summers only.
